5 Months Contract with a Local Authority

Umbrella - £31.54 per hour - Umbrella

Job Purpose

As a Gas Engineer, you will provide a high-quality repairs, maintenance, servicing, fault-finding, and installation service across occupied and void council properties, public buildings, and housing assets within the London Borough of Hackney. The role focuses on ensuring gas appliances, heating systems, and hot water systems remain safe, compliant, and fully operational while delivering excellent customer service to residents.

Key Duties/Accountabilities

  • Carry out annual gas servicing and gas safety inspections.
  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair gas appliances and heating systems.
  • Repair and maintain boilers, radiators, pumps, motorised valves, controls, and hot water systems.
  • Install boilers, gas fires, warm air units, and heating controls.
  • Undertake gas pipework alterations and associated plumbing works.
  • Drain down and recommission heating systems following repairs.
  • Replace immersion heaters and associated components.
  • Carry out minor plumbing, electrical, and making-good works.
  • Accurately assess faults and determine appropriate remedial actions.
  • Complete landlord gas safety certificates and relevant compliance documentation.
  • Use PDA/mobile systems to update work orders and records.
  • Maintain vehicle stock levels and manage materials efficiently.
  • Work safely at heights using scaffolding, ladders, and temporary access equipment.
  • Support apprentices and less experienced engineers through mentoring and guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998.
  • Deliver responsive repairs, planned maintenance, and cyclical works.
  • Maintain excellent customer service standards when working in residents' homes.

Essential Experience Required

  • Extensive experience as a Gas Engineer.
  • Gas servicing and maintenance experience.
  • Boiler installation and replacement experience.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing heating and hot water systems.
  • Experience completing landlord gas safety inspections.
  • Experience working within social housing, local authority housing, or residential maintenance environments.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic abilities.
  • Experience using PDA/mobile working systems.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workloads effectively.
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision.

Additional requirements:

  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Relevant Gas Safe / ACS certifications.
  • Up-to-date renewable gas qualifications.

Additional Information to Note

  • Working hours: 35 hours per week.
  • Location: London Borough of Hackney.
  • Council vehicle provided for operational duties.
  • ACS qualifications must remain valid throughout the assignment.
